server timed out error when publishing

I keep getting an error that says "The server "" timed out " when I try to publish changes using FP2003. I have read that there is a know issue with publishing large files (>1 MB) but I do not have any individual files that exceed that size. Any help is appreciated.

It's bandwidth.

I get that periodically when there is a lot of traffic on my ISP and or webserver. Generally, I just run a publish again and no problems (update files not all files option in publish).

Some hosts are chronically bad; VERIO. They tell you theres nothing wrong with the server, but the issue persists even though you publish larger sites on other servers. If the problem is persistant, try publishing the same site as a sub-web to another website. If it times out, try it from another ISP (isolates where the issue is). If it publishes fine to another server the problem is probably the host. If it publishes fine from another ISP the problem is probably your ISP. If it doesn't work on either, they may be some corrupted code in your web.

RE: server timed out error when publ... (in reply to chucke

I have been using FP for almost seven years and it's been quite an education. However, I have to admit that I am very ignorant of computerese, despite the fact that I have built a pretty large website. I am comfortable with FrontPage, and was dismayed that MS discontinued it. Was more dismayed when I bought Web Expression and discovered how much more complicated it was. Besides that, I couldn't import my web to it.

Now that I have gotten past that background, I have read that timed out error thread with interest because that's what's happening now to me. I managed to upload most of my complete web site to the host last week with only a 500 error message to mar the upload. I could give you the whole sad tale, but doubt there's enough space here.

Can you explain, first about that bandwidth problem?
I have a very hard time believing that I had absolutely no problem uploading for over six years to the same web host and now that I had my computer upgraded I can't do a thing except read those darned timed out error messages! My web host says it's because I need to put all my images into the htdocs file....
