Imported my website to Frontpage on PC

Because of that lovely fatal blue screen error, I had to get a new computer, but I saved everything. I found a good used one from craig's list, thank God. I found that I had to re-load my software again, including Frontpage. Then I was so thankful I could import my website (www.traintracts.com) into FP again on my "new" used computer. I was so glad because I wanted to make changes to my website and publish it again. I was successful in changing and re-publishing my contact page, and a few other other pages, but the home page or the "index" page of my website will not publish now and I am stumped as to WHY? I've tried several times. I see the index page I want to publish on my FP on my computer, but it will not publish online. This is so frustrating. I really need some help.

Hello,

More specific information will help us to help you.

How did you "import" your website and from where did you import it?

How does it fail? Are there error messages? Password problems? Are you publishing using FrontPage HTTP publishing or are you using FTP publishing?

RE: Imported my website to Frontpage... (in reply to traintracts

Greetings!

I thought I should chine in... A little sideline from traintracts problems.
Same here: lost original FP2002 web files on a stolen computer. Old site: www.halona.com
Needs refurbishing for now while I prepare another better one.
I opened the site from the servers at ReadyHosting.com, using
File >>> OpenWeb
Good: all folders and files listed in FP.
But no navigation view - some hyperlinks view
Also, how does one save the open website folders/files to one's computer to work on them and republish through FP2002. I saved some .htm files to a directory on my HD, but I am not sure I should work on those files AND republish AND perhaps mess up the online site navigation features...

I hope that complement traintracts question - especially insofar as "importing the website" goes... NOTE: I had been told by my ISP people to use FileZilla to download the website files, and some other means.

Thanks you!

To retrieve the files from the web site and bring them down to your computer for editing,

* Start FrontPage and close any webs that may be open.

* Select the File menu and choose Open Site. Open web address http://domain.com (substitute your domain name.)

* Select the File menu and choose Publish Site. Publish to the "File System" and browse to a new, empty folder on your computer. When you publish, answer "yes" to create a web in the new folder. As you publish, all of the files will be brought down properly to your computer.

* Select the File menu and choose Close Site.

* Select the File menu and choose Open Site. Browse to the folder on your computer and Open.

* Edit pages as desired and save them. When finished, select the File menu and choose Publish Site. Publish the site to http://domain.com (substitute your domain name.)

Rick_E as well as traintracts,

Have not heard of traintacts following Rick_E's recommended steps. I'll try to help flesh things out a bit...

Rick, you stated (and I'll comment with +++ brackets):

* Start FrontPage and close any webs that may be open.

* Select the File menu and choose Open Site. Open web address http://domain.com (substitute your domain name.)

+++++Question: as the online site is visible in FP, it does not allow for NAVIGATION view, and barely shows HYPERLINKS. Normal? +++++

* Select the File menu and choose Publish Site. Publish to the "File System" and browse to a new, empty folder on your computer. When you publish, answer "yes" to create a web in the new folder. As you publish, all of the files will be brought down properly to your computer.

+++++QUESTION: everything gets "brought down"? navigations, links? When I publish to a local folder, I soon get a window indicating that "The following pages in your website contain dynamic FrontPage components, such as Search Form or a FP Form Handler' They will not work unless they are published to a web server running the FPSE"
If I just select continue, the publishing goes a bit further and another windows pops up: "The following pages in your Web are ASP. They will not work because the server you are publishing to does not support ASP"
So, obviously, as I again press "Continue", the publishing to local folder will not be complete, right?+++++

+++++QUestion: if I just edits specific pages, do I publish to the website online by selecting Tools>>>Options>>>Publish>>>Changed pages Only? What I am trying to do is: 1) Edit some info out of a few pages 2)Simply eliminate some obsolete pages off the site. Neither having forms ot ASP stuff in them.++++

I'll appreciate and also hope that this thread will help others still grappling with FP2002

-Thanks - Roger T

I would think it would show, but I really cannot comment on this because I don't use navigation view.

yes supposedly.

quote:

The following pages in your website contain dynamic FrontPage components, such as Search Form or a FP Form Handler' They will not work unless they are published to a web server running the FPSE
This is a normal message because your computer does not have the FPSE extensions on it. Forms, etc. wont work until back up on the server.

quote:

following pages in your Web are ASP. They will not work because the server you are publishing to does not support ASP
Again this is a normal message. The ASP pages should work once they are back up on the server.

quote:

So, obviously, as I again press "Continue", the publishing to local folder will not be complete, right?
The local web should be complete, but pages requiring the FPSE extensions such as forms may not work until back up on the server. This is normal.

if I just edits specific pages, do I publish to the website online by selecting Tools>>>Options>>>Publish>>>Changed pages Only?
Publish (in FP 2003) by selecting the File menu and choosing Publish Site. Publish the site to the same name as the web you opened earlier (http://domain.com or http://www.yourdomain.com) .Yes you will be publishing changed pages only. Pages you delete should get deleted on the server during the publish.
