Search Engine for Intranet

Hello;
I administer a technical documentation part of our internal intranet--essentially a collection of manuals (4GB). I have been asked if I can create a search engine that will work for us. The manuals are organized by manufacturer and frequently someone knows the model, but not the manufacturer, so I can see how this would be helpful.
I have found several web-based engines that are capable of doing this, but since this portion of our website is password protected, these engines do not have the access they need to inde the site.
If necessary i could re-index the website for a search engine when necessary. I use FP 2003, and if someone has a method of helping me accomplish this I would be grateful.
Thanks!

You have not provided enough information for an adequate response.
What flavor is the server? Microsoft (what version)? Linux/Unix?
What type of documents are you searching for? PDF's, MS Word, Text, a combination?
What approaches do you favor? IIS Indexing? Database?
Using IIS indexing and an installed ISAPI filter .dll to read the text inside the PDF files using an ASP page is a nice approach since you can programatically limit the search to certain folders in the index (or the reverse, search everything EXCEPT certain folders).
Using a database is easy but requires maintenance. The database columns could contain document title, description, author, model number, manufacturer, path to the document itself, etc. but someone has to enter the information and maintain it. Of course, a simple form that both uploads the document and the relevant information would be easy to implement making on-going maintenance simple.

1. Linux
2. Since each manual has it's own webpage, I would like to search for .html files. Someone would type "standard and accubind" into the search blank and the result might look like this "/manuals/standard/tapebinders/accubind.htm" I thought this would simplify the search function and also provide a link to the appropriate page.
3. As far as indexing types, I would not know which to prefer...I am looking for a way for someone to be able to navigate to the accubind page without knowing that it is in the standard section. This portion of our website is hosted by an outside company who is willing to work with us for a solution.
I hope this helps.

Well, Linux isn't my expertise. There is a java solution Jakarta Lucene which (if I remember correctly) is a text indexer and [search app?] for Apache on Linux.

You might look at some open source document management systems to see if they would help. Or there are a number of PHP scripts that could search your website - you might check out hotscripts.

Atomz is another search utility that might be easier - I used them probably about ten years ago and the service was pretty good back then
