You have not provided enough information for an adequate response. What flavor is the server? Microsoft (what version)? Linux/Unix? What type of documents are you searching for? PDF's, MS Word, Text, a combination? What approaches do you favor? IIS Indexing? Database? Using IIS indexing and an installed ISAPI filter .dll to read the text inside the PDF files using an ASP page is a nice approach since you can programatically limit the search to certain folders in the index (or the reverse, search everything EXCEPT certain folders). Using a database is easy but requires maintenance. The database columns could contain document title, description, author, model number, manufacturer, path to the document itself, etc. but someone has to enter the information and maintain it. Of course, a simple form that both uploads the document and the relevant information would be easy to implement making on-going maintenance simple.
