Publishing Hitch

I recently moved my site/s from destop to laptop.

Now when I try to publish changed pages, I can log-in and connect and the page starts publishing for some time then I get the following message and it stops. If I restart, it starts at the beginning again and doesn't get any further than half way. It's quite a large site and it seems to be trying to republish the whole site rather than changes.
Any suggestions? My host, as usual, is not much help and in the meantime I have an unbalanced site.

"Could not find server www.hanafor.com on port 80. Please check to make sure that the Web server name is valid and your proxy settings are set correctly. If you are sure that everything is correct, the web server may be temporarily out of service".

I have had some success in similar situations as follows...

First, select the Tools menu, choose Recalculate, and wait for it to finish.

Start publishing and when it stops, write down the file it stops on. Select the file and choose Don't Publish. Then start the publish sequence again.

If (when) it stops again, write down the file it stops on this time. Mark this file as Don't Publish then restart the publish sequence.

By repeating this drill, the publish sequence may eventually go all the way to completion. Then you can go back to your list of "Don't Publish" files and remove the Don't Publish from one file at a time and publish. Eventually the publish finishes with all files published.

I'm not sure why this works or if it will work for you, but it has worked for me.

Unfortunately, that didn't work for me. Tried a few different things along the same lines but no success. I even marked the whole site except for the first 20 items 'not to publish'. Said this published successfully but when I started again, unmarking 'not to publish' for the next 20 items, it began from the first photos again and didn't get much further than the first time.

I'm getting desperate!

The only thing I can think of is to overwrite the whole site but with only dial-up that will take forever and, the connection will drop out more than once before it's finished. Is there any way to set FP 2003 to pick up publishing from where it finished last time and not start from the beginning?

Alternatively, we have ADSL at work. Anyway I could tap into the line there to publish? Not sure how ...

Thanks,
Barbara

Sometimes cleaning out old temp files helps. Here's how to clean up old temp files.

* In Internet Explorer, select the Tools menu and choose Internet Options... in the Browsing History section, click Delete Files then click Temporary Internet Files. Note: In versions other than IE7 this sequence may vary.

* In Windows, click the Start button... All Programs... Accessories... System Tools... Disk Cleanup. Wait 2-5 minutes or more while Disk Cleanup scans your hard drive. Make sure there are checks in the boxes for Temporary Internet Files, Temporary Files, Web Client/Publisher Temporary Files, and Temporary Offline Files, then click OK.

Note: The following menu sequences are for FrontPage 2003. Prior FrontPage versions may differ.

* In FrontPage, with your site open, select the Tools menu and choose Site Settings... Advanced tab... Delete Temporary Files.

* Select the Tools menu and choose Recalculate. Wait 1-3 minutes or more for it to finish.

* Select any file in the Folder list then select the view menu and choose Refresh.

* Select the File menu and choose Close Site. Then close FrontPage and restart your computer.

Rick,

I did as you said and, took the laptop to work where it tapped into wireless network and published the site successfully taking about an hour. !!! Thank you SO much.
Have one more site to go.

BTW, I'm curious to know what will happen now/if FP 2003 is discontinued. Does this mean that we will not be able to use it to make and maintain sites - and have to pay hundreds for a new programme?????

Thanks again,
Barbara

FrontPage has already been discontinued, however that does not mean it suddenly stops working.

If you use the FrontPage features that require the server extensions, you can continue using FrontPage as long as there is a host that offers the extensions. Meanwhile you may want to start eliminating the features that require the extensions.

If you do not use the features that require the extensions, you can continue to use FrontPage and publish using FrontPage FTP.
