New to FrontPage

Hello all!

Thanks for the opportunity to learn from those who have walked the path before me.

I am not really a newbie with FP, but I have only been coding static pages that have been really basic stuff. I'm here and writing because I am interested in creating pages with dynamic pages, but I am finding few resources that point me in the right direction using FP.

Does FP work well with Dynamic content or is it better to take the longer road of coding everything manually? That just seems like a lot of work with the technology available- call me lazy!

I'm not looking for a free lunch, I don't want anyone to hold my hand and walk me through anything! I'm just looking for a push in the right direction to coding nice dynamic web pages. My first projects are to create a simple online store selling widgets and a forum site- These should get me on the way to understanding dynamic web programming.

Thanks for the input!

First, the FrontPage extensions are all but being eliminated from hosting companies.
So, using the Front Page wizards and webbots to create interactive pages is really NOT a good idea.
Hand coding it is--but in reality most coders borrow other's code and manipulate for their own use.
WOW--a shopping cart and a forum are NOT projects you want to learn to code from scratch. No need to re-invent the wheel--there are plenty of open source carts and forums available for free (or for very little money).
The easiest way to self-teach is to take a bit of code and take it apart....see how it all fits together...play with it and change it around. ASP classic is easy to learn and a good choice for beginners although the world has moved past classic ASP and on to ASP.NET.
As usual, the w3schools has a great set of tutorials:

Thanks also for this information.

I'll heed your warning, but you're really telling me that hand coding is the way to go? It seems to take forever, though that may just be my newness to dynamic coding and my being spoiled by having FP do most of the hard work for me.

I suppose on your suggestion, I'll go back to the drawing board. I really didn't expect to hear that to be the best answer but thank you for your insight.

What I said was to learn by using other folk's code if possible and change it to suit your needs. No program "writes code" for you, although FrontPage tried very hard to make that happen with its wizards, webbots, and extensions. Obviously that failed. DreamWeaver and Expression have "helper" applications that make writing database connections and dynamic code a little easier but you still have to work in code view to make things work the way you want them to, chaning code "by hand". The future for non-coders is the utilization of web applications that allow one to build a dynamic website using forms (content manager).
