How to Password protect a Folder the...

If you are using the FrontPage extensions and want to password protect a folder, it's best apply the password protection the "FrontPage Way". This is because applying password protection the "control panel/htaccess way" modifies the FrontPage htaccess file, often corrupting or confusing the FrontPage extensions.

Note: some of the prompts in the following instructions for the FrontPage way of applying password protection may vary slightly depending the version of FrontPage you're using.

* If your web site on your hard drive is not already open, select the FrontPage File menu and choose Open Site. Open your site on your hard drive.

* Create a new folder in your web and move the page(s) you wish to protect into the new folder.

* Right-click on the new folder and choose Convert to Web. This will create what FrontPage calls a subweb in the folder.

* Select the File menu and choose Publish Site. Publish to web address http://yourdomain.com (substitute your own domain name and don't use the www part). Make sure to include the subweb by placing a check in the check box. In FrontPage 2003, include the subweb by clicking Remote Web Site Properties then clicking the Publishing tab and placing a check in the box to Include Subsites. After publishing, select the File menu and choose Close Site to close the web site on your computer.

* Select the File menu and choose Open Site to open your web site live on the server. You must open the site live in order to apply the password protection to your new subweb folder. Open web address web address http://yourdomain.com (substitute your domain name and don't use the www).

* In your web site open on the server, double-click the subweb folder to open the subweb on the server.

* In the subweb, select the Tools menu and choose Server... Administration Home.

* In the Users and Roles section, click the link to Change subweb permissions. Select the option to Use Unique Permissions for this Web Site and click the Submit button. At the top, click the Administration link to return to the Administration Home.

* Click the link to Change anonymous access settings. Select the option to turn Anonymous access off and click the Submit button. At the top, click the Administration link to return to the Administration Home.

* Click the link to Manage Users. Click the link to add a user. Enter the username and password, select the user's role, and click the Add User button. If you are finished adding users, click the Administration link to return to the Administration Home.

* If you are finished making changes, select the File menu and choose Close Site.

RE: How to Password protect a Folder... (in reply to Rick_E

Rick E - I've started doing it this way and although it took a bit to get comfortable with it, I find it to be not just the FrontPage way, but the Better Way, as well.

My question is this: From a security standpoint, when does the session close? Is it when I exit from the site? When I exit from FrontPage? When I close the web? Please advise.

Thanks.

RE: HELP!! Password protect a Folder... (in reply to Rick_E

Hi Rick-E and any FRONTPAGE 2003 experts out there:

I have followed your instructions on creating a subweb (per your instructions on password protect a folder). My intent is to create a subweb site that is password protected. I use Frontpage 2003, and my server (lunarpages) has Frontpage extensions, and is unix-based.

I have spent the last three hours trying to publish a subweb site folder . This is where I experience the problem:

When I am ready to publish, I click on "Publish site" under the File menu. Two separate boxes appear. One for "local web site" and the other for "remote web site." As you know, one has to "transfer" files that one wants to publish from "local" to "remote" by clicking on a blue left to right arrow.

The problem occurs when I want to "transfer" the subweb site from "local" to "remote." The blue left to right arrow does not activate (light up) and hence, I am unable to transfer file.

When I open my subweb in my "local" box, the many files appear, and can be transferred to the "remote" box for publication. This has to be done one by one. But that defeats the purpose of creating a subweb site for password protection, because the files to be protected are not in a subweb. Am I making any sense to you?

All I want to do is to be able to publish my subwebs. I wonder if I am doing things wrong? Can anyone advise? I have the book by Paul Colligan and Jim Cheshire, and I still haven't figured it out.

I called the lunarpages (my server) help desk, and they suggested I publish via FTP, instead of HTTP.

Well...I just want to know if I could do anything to correct my current problem before taking the step to publish FTP. I also understand it is better to publish via HTTP (? I read that somewhere).

Please help !

Frustrated me

Lisa

I'm surprised LunarPages suggested that. You're right to avoid publishing using FTP.

When you see the local and remote boxes, click on Remote Site Properties... then click the Publishing tab. Place a check in the box to Include Subsites.

RE: How to Password protect a Folder... (in reply to Rick_E

Hello friends,

I have discovered how to create a subwebsite and publish via HTTP, after about 8 hours of tinkering around.

The solution is quite apparent and easy actually. All I had to do was to go to lunarpages (my server), and create a subdomain via the CPANEL. After the subdomain was constructed, whenever I use FRONTPAGE 2003, the subwebsite/subdomain folder is instantly placed in the "remote website" column, without having the need to transfer it over.

I have to to a separate "publish site" function for the subdomain.

By using all the instructions for password protection (per Rick-E) for the subdomain, I now have created a subdomain that is password protected. I am very happy.

Thank you!!!

Lisa

Does it work the same way for FrontPage 2002 users?

RE: How to Password protect a Folder... (in reply to Rick_E

At some web hosts you can also use the host's control panel to apply password protection and it does not bother FrontPage. The success of this method depends on how the web host has implemented the password protection.

If your web host's password protection works with FrontPage, you may find that method more convenient than using the FrontPage method of password protection. Advantages to using the web host's password protection include

* You don't need to convert the folder to a FrontPage subweb,

* You don't lose the password protection along with the usernames and passwords if you need to remove and reinstall the FrontPage server extensions.

RE: How to Password protect a Folder... (in reply to Rick_E

I have followed all of the steps listed by Rick_E and it worked perfectly until I get to:

* In the subweb, select the Tools menu and choose Server... Administration Home.

When I do this I get a message that says: " A World Wide Web Browser, such as Microsoft Internet Explorer, is required to use this feature."

Any ideas why I might be getting this message? I have IE installed on my computer. I can't get any further and keep getting this message. Thanks for you help!

instead of selecting Tools > Server > Administration Home, try selecting Tools > Server > Permissions instead. Then Manage Users and follow the prompts.

Hope that helps.

That was my best shot - sorry. Unless ... do you use another browser, as well? If so, check to see if IE is set as the default.

That message might occur is your Internet Explorer security was set to "High" or if a firewall were not allowing FrontPage full access to the Internet.

Also make sure your IE browser is listed in the File menu... Preview in Browser dialog.

Also, you may need to be logged into Windows on a username that's an Administrator.

Hi Rick~ Thanks a ton for the help before but I have a snag and I'm not sure what it's about. I keep getting the error code:
Can't locate the password file - AuthUserFile is not specified in the web's ACL file.

Any suggestions?

RE: How to Password protect a Folder... (in reply to Rick_E

I found this thread while searching through Google for an answer to a problem that I can't seem to get resolved.

I am using Linux via GoDaddy as a host and am using MS Frontpage 2003 to publish.

I have my main site which is accessible to anyone, but my subweb is password protected. For some reason, though, the site is requesting a username/password for the main site as well as the subweb. If you click 'cancel' you can navigate around without any problem, but everytime you return to the index.htm page it looks for a password.

I have posted this on a few boards without much luck and also have talked to my host - one problem I thought I had was that I hadn't setup my subdomain through my host, only through frontpage - so I uninstall FPE and reinstalled, but no luck.

Any ideas!?

Thanks in advance for taking a look.

RE: How to Password protect a Folder... (in reply to Rick_E

I have followed the directions for password protecting a folder the FrontPage Way and ran into the following situation when trying to change anonymous access settings:

"The server administration programs and the server extensions on the web server are not compatible. The administration program is too old to use with this server"

I'm running FP03 and my host server is GoDaddy. They assured me their FP extensions are current. I even reinstalled extensions and reinstalled FP03 and still get the same error message. It also won't allow me to add a user - gives same EM.

Has anyone had this problem and if so, what can be done?

I appreciate your input!

RE: How to Password protect a Folder... (in reply to Rick_E

I too was using FP03 with Godaddy and I NEVER got the password working the way it was intended.

Basically what I was told by Godaddy was that I could use a password to protect it all but that same password actually would allow ALL users to access my main web site meaning my Disgruntled subcontractors could easily toast or wipe out my entire web page. I told them I must have at least 2 passwords one for me for all access and one for others for limited access and was told there was no way to do that. I think the problem is with Godaddy's hosting service.

So in the end I purchased Spooky Login and it worked great and everyone got their own passwords to specific pages and I could track what they did and when they did it. Now I'm not a computer guru but I was able to get Spooky running after a couple of support emails to understand the concept because Spooky could do WAY more than I actually needed.

Anyway, hope that helps. You will probably never get the password stuff working properly with Godaddy so start looking at other options. I had to because I had 35 subcontractors that needed access to back office stuff.

Bye.

You are not alone. I have seen to many people go through this problem. Change host. If GoDaddy can't help you, then it's time to move on. They will give you a refurn for any unused services.

I have tried all of Rick_E's suggestions to no avail...
I am quite puzzled since I used to be able to access my server options in the past with no problems!
I downgraded my IE from 7 to 6 thinking that may help, but still the same stupid error message: " A World Wide Web Browser, such as Microsoft Internet Explorer, is required to use this feature."
Anyone have an explanation/solution for this?
I would be very grateful!!

SOLVED: IE needs to be set as the default browser!!

Happy Holidays to all!!
