Can themes be altered? Wider, etc.

I am new to FrontPage and I am using FP98. I love the poetic theme, BUT:

1) Can I make the headers larger? and

2) How can I get my "Buttons" to look like the ones in my theme? When I insert a "Hover Button" it is just a squared off button whereas the one in my theme at the top of the page to go "Back" is fancy and matches the theme. How can I duplicate that?

Thank you from this Newbie!

Wecome to the forum!
You're going to hate my answer.
You can't easily modify themes.
You really shouldn't use anything (like themes) that relies on the FrontPage extensions since they are going away.
The hover button is a java applet and is the absolutely WORST choice for navigation (Microsoft admitted this was a huge mistake by not including them in other versions of FP). Without Java installed they just won't work and search engines can't follow them.

Why not try a free open source template?

You are correct, I do not like your answer. I can get my hands on FrontPage 2000, would that make any difference or do you still recommend not using FP at all? I have used computers since 1982, and even built my last two...but I am new to web design. I did one for a place I worked using Yahoo's Site Builder and that was simple enough. Now my townhouse development wants me to design their's. A fellow had already started using FP 2000 on GoDaddy's server, but it wasn't that good looking or finished, so I redid it with my thoughts...it looks great, but now you have me afraid to actually "publish" it; it sounds like I could run into problems in the future. The development will buy me software if I need it, but I have no idea if the free stuff is just as good or what brand is both good AND easy! Can you help? Thank you!

The new Microsoft Expression Web--the replacement for Front Page-- is pretty good.
I was one of about 30 Microsoft MVP's who helped provide input to the development team that created the product and it turned out OK--lots of compromises when there is development by committee. We mostly use DreamWeaver CS3 and I am in the BETA group for CS4 and have been using it for about two months--it's my preference. However, with the advances in Silverlight and the media solutions in the Expression Studio I also own a full version of the Microsoft product suite--
"Letting" Front Page build your site is a horrible idea but using it like notepad on steriods isn't too bad.
An alternative would be a Blog or WIKI--these are browser-based content management systems so that you don't need to buy any software at all. You can even purchase a CMS for under $150 and have it installed and running in 30 minutes on your own hosted server.

Thank you so much for all of your help. I guess I will check out the free ones on the link you sent me. All of this is so confusing, ha! I recently did build one on wiki for a Blues band and it was pretty easy...lots of ads! Thanks again.

After searching around a bit, I had one more question:

Have you used WordPress, or heard about how good it is? It looks pretty impressive. I was wondering how it compared to the OSWD's that you showed me. Thanks.

The open source templates are just that--templates. You download them and use your web editor to add content. "Save As" a new page and add more content and change the navigation, etc.

WordPress is a 3rd part blogging site that allows you to customize your blog with templates. The basic service is free--you can't beat the price--with upgrades for domain hosting if you want to use this on your own .com name.

We also provide WIKI's (web sites you create/update with your browser) installed on your web site with custom graphics for $250 US.

If you are hosted on a Linux web host that has the cPanel control panel, check out the Fantastico feature. Fantastico includes among other things, free standards-based templates that are pretty good and the price is right.

Thanks Rick, I appreciate your response. I am using XP and I have no way of upgrading to FP2003 (2000 is the closest I can come), and because of Texas Web Developers Moderator, I think I will abandon FP and try something different. I am looking at BlueVoda...it seems easy enough to learn and yet feature ladened enough I think it would be ideal. Again, thanks for everybody's help.
